POKEMON Sight Words

Are you interested in using Pokemon with your kids? Last year, I added a bit of Pokemon characters to my Brag Cards and kids just fell for it! This year, with the Pokemon Go Craze around the world, I thought of changing my sight word system with Pokemon style.

This works after you have assessed the students with sight words. I have broken down Fry's 1,000 words into 4 levels from level 1 being the easiest to level 4 being the hardest. In each level, there are 10 lists. Each list consists of an assessment page, and 5 pages of sight words broken down into 5 words per page.

What I do with the assessment page is do pre/post test with the kids during the word study time. You can choose to do either one or do both. Once the assessment is done, I give the booklet to students and they can practice these words during the word work time. On Friday, I work with students to see how many words they have mastered. They can color the lock icon on the page as soon as they master each word. Or they can put a sticker.

If students master everything in the list, then they passed it and can earn the Pokemon Badge card. Just like my brag tag, I print this in a wallet size so that it looks like a card.

When students master the 10 lists in each level, they can 'capture' the Pokemon. This is my version of certificate for successfully mastering the words.

I think of these cards as prizes, but if you have some sort of incentive system in your class, that works well with this booklet. In each list, I have made two versions of cards: one with a crown and one without a crown. If you have used my Brag Card system, you already know how to use this. If you don't , it's quite simple. When students get the card with the crown, then the student has earned a chance to claim a prize from you - whether that be a tangible prize like a toy or choosing a reward coupon.

I hope this will motivate your students to learn and enjoy it! Feel free to email me for questions or concerns!
